The transformation of this 1915 bungalow focuses on enhancing the original character of the home while updating the circulation and creating a feeling of openness to match today’s lifestyle.
As the architect on this Portland bungalow remodel, Maria Lawler’s approach centered on preserving the home’s 1915 Craftsman character while rethinking how the spaces connect. The kitchen renovation opened sight lines to the dining room and back patio, transforming the heart of the home from a closed-off galley into a bright, social space. Original trim profiles, window casings, and built-in details were carefully preserved throughout.
This historic home renovation in Portland demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can modernize a century-old bungalow without losing the character that makes it special. The project included updated circulation patterns, improved natural light, and a kitchen layout designed for how families actually live today.
Portland Bungalow
Before.
This modest bungalow had great bones (and windows!), but the separation between the dining and kitchen cut the house in half socially. Access to the back patio through the kitchen was awkward and the kitchen felt dark.
The bathroom offered even northern light but had an awkward and dysfunctional layout.
